The Institute of Humanitarian Research of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was established in 2022 (Order No. 244 dated March 24, 2022, "On Amendments to the Charter of the Perm Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the RAS")  on the basis of the Department of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography (founded in March 2003) and the Department of Political Institutions and Processes Research (established in October 2003). The Institute operates as a separate structural unit of the Center. 

The primary goal of the Institute is to advance and promote fundamental research in socio-humanitarian sciences through active study of historical and cultural heritage, the reconstruction of regional ethnocultural traditions, the research on political consciousness, cultural and social identity of the population in the region and adjacent territories.

The Institute comprises two departments.

Main research fields of the Department of History and Archaeology with the Laboratory of Natural Science Methods in Archaeology

  • Comprehensive studies of the initial settlement of the region, ancient and modern migrations, ancient production technologies, ethnocultural characteristics of peoples, historical and cultural interactions in the Western Urals and adjacent territories within the broader Eurasian context. 

Main research fields of the Department of Political Institutions and Processes Research:

  • Electoral studies: voting behavior, electoral process management, election technologies and their effects.
  • Local politics amid the transformation of municipal governance structures.
  • Macro-regional, regional, and local identities in comparative perspective.
  • Transformation of religious consciousness and denominational communities. 

The total number of the staff  is 25 (21 research workers, 6 Doctors of Sciences, 10 Candidates of Sciences).
