In February 2002, the on-site Presidium of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences made a decision to open the calving of humanitarian institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Perm. This was done in order to correct the historically established bias in the subject of scientific research of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Western Urals. In March 2003, Perm Department of the Institute of History and Archeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was opened, in April 2004 it was transformed into Perm Branch of the Institute. In March 2013, Perm branch of the IHA UB RAS was transformed into the Department of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the PSC UB RAS (now PFRC UB RAS).
The main directions of research activities of the department:
Comprehensive studies of the initial settlement of the region, ethnogenesis, processes of adaptation of human groups to changing natural and socio-cultural conditions, migrations in antiquity and modernity, ancient industries, ethno-cultural appearance of peoples, ancient and modern ethnic processes, historical and cultural interaction in Western Urals and adjacent territories in the general Eurasian background.
The staff of the department. The total number of employees is 12 (10 research workers, 1 Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 Doctor of Sciences, 3 Candidates of Sciences). The share of young researchers (up to 39 years) in the department team is 40%.
