The Photonics Laboratory of the PFRC UB RAS was organized in 2013 on the initiative of the Chairman of the Presidium of the Perm Scientific Center, Academician V.P. Matveyenko and General Director of the Perm Scientific-Production Instrument-Making Company. The foundation of the laboratory was one of the steps in the development of photonics in Perm krai on the basis of a fiber cluster based on industrial enterprises, national universities and the academic center of Perm.

The first head of the laboratory was A.S. Kurkov, Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, specialist in world-class fiber optics and fiber lasers. Fiber lasers were the keynote of the scientific activity of the division at the first time after it began its work, but soon new areas of research were metrological and sensory applications of optical reflectometry, technology of active and passive optical components and methods for their testing, as well as biophotonics.

The main directions of research activities of the laboratory:

• metrological and sensory applications of optical reflectometry;
• technology of active and passive optical components and methods for their testing;
• biophotonics.

The staff of the laboratory. The total number of employees is 11 people (9 of them are scientists, 4 are candidates of sciences). The share of young researchers (up to the age of 39) in the department team is 67%.
