The Department was created on 12 October 2003 - on this day, the official opening of Perm branch of the Institute of Philosophy and Law, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the only academic center of political sciences outside Moscow, took place. In 2013 there was the reorganization of academic institutions, and the branch was transformed into the Department for the study of political institutions and processes of Perm Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
From the very beginning and up to April 2018, the Department was headed by Professor Oleg Borisovich Podvintsev, the first Doctor of Political Sciences in Perm krai, under whose leadership the formation of the Department, the creative and professional growth of the staff took place.
The main directions of research activities of the Department:
- Electoral studies: the study of electoral behavior, electoral process management, electoral technologies, their effects and results;
- Local policy in the context of the transformation of the institutional structure of local self-government;
- Structural components and interrelations of macroregional, regional and local identities in a comparative perspective;
- Transformation of religious consciousness and confessional communities.
Department staff. The total number of employees is 10 (10 scientists, 3 Doctors of Sciences, 6 Candidates of Sciences). The share of young researchers (up to 39 years) in the Department team is 40%.
